The Orton-Gillianham approach is not a curriculum. It is an approach to phonics and phonics related skills that allows the tutor to tailor lessons based on the unique needs of the student. It is a structured, phonetically-based approach which involves correctly learning the sounds of individual letters and letter combinations using multi-sensory activities. Reading and Spelling are taught together in isolation. Then these isolated skills are integrated into a student's writing and reading at the end of each lesson. Students learn skills starting with the simpler and more common skills, and then, in time, move on to the more difficult and less common ones. All lessons are planned specifically for the needs of the student.
The Orton-Gillingham approach has been around since the middle of the 1930's and has been proven to be an effective phonics approach for all students, whether they are dyslexic or not.
